Pet Food Donations Needed to Help Area Residents
(9/1/10) - Willamette Humane Society (WHS) is currently asking for donations of pet food to help area residents experiencing financial difficulties. Due to extremely high demand and a slowing of donations over the summer months, WHS staff and volunteers fear that they will not have enough food to distribute to everyone who requests help in upcoming months.
Rather than have people surrender their pets due to financial constraints, Willamette Humane Society is hoping to keep more pets in homes by providing food to residents experiencing financial hardship. Pet food donated by local retail partners and the public is redistributed through two food assistance programs: AniMeals and the Pet Food Bank. AniMeals is a partnership with Meals on Wheels of America, where pet food is delivered to the elderly and other homebound individuals. WHS distributes food to the public through its Pet Food Bank, which is held the first Saturday of each month at the shelter between 10 am and 12 pm.
Donations of dry dog and cat food are preferred, but can be any variety, brand or size. Donations are accepted at the shelter at 4246 Turner Road SE during regular business hours: Monday, Thursday and Friday, 12 pm to 7 pm, and Saturday and Sunday, 12 pm and 6 pm. The shelter is closed Tuesday and Wednesday.
WHS Closed on Labor Day - Monday, September 6
Willamette Humane Society will be closed to visitors Monday, September 6, in honor of the Labor Day holiday. The shelter will re-open at noon (regular time) on Thursday, September 9.
Regular shelter hours are Monday, Thursday, and Friday, 12 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. The shelter is closed to the public on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Shop Online and Earn Cash for the Animals
(8/25/10) - Shop your favorite online retailers - like Macy’s, eBay, the Gap, Amazon, and many more - and earn money for the animals at the same time. WHS has teamed up with Goodshop.com, a new online shopping mall which donates up to 30% of purchases to consumers’ favorite charities. Simply download the Willamette Humane Society - GoodShop toolbar, and every time you shop online, a portion of your purchase will be donated directly to WHS! Get the toolbar.
Road Work will Affect Traffic on Turner Road
(8/20/10) - Turner Road SE, between the entrance to Cascade Gateway Park and Airway Drive SE, will be reduced to one lane of traffic on weekdays, beginning August 23 through September 10, due to road work. If you are planning a trip to Willamette Humane Society and traveling south on Turner Road, expect congestion and possible delays. To avoid this area, if you are traveling on I-5, you can exit at Kuebler Blvd, go east on Kuebler, and then go north on Turner Rd.
Eat Fresh and Raise Funds for WHS
(9/2/10) - Print this flyer and bring it to Baja Fresh (located at 945 Lancaster Drive NE) on either Friday, September 17, or Saturday, September 18, and the restaurant will donate 15% of the proceeds to Willamette Humane Society!

Adoptable Cats and Kittens Now Available at PETCO Stores
(7/13/10) - On Thursday, July 1, Percy, Chiron, Nico and Tyson bounded out of their carriers and into their new digs at the Keizer Station PETCO. The four kittens - named after characters in the popular Percy Jackson & the Olympians series of fantasy novels - were the first feline residents from Willamette Humane to be placed in PETCO’s adoption center.
“One of our biggest challenges is finding enough homes for all of our adoptable cats and kittens,” said WHS Shelter Operations Director Jamie Fitzpatrick. Last year, WHS took in 7,405 cats and kittens - more than any other shelter in Oregon. “This new partnership with PETCO provides us with a great opportunity to get more adoptable cats into loving homes,” added Fitzpatrick.
Volunteers from Willamette Humane Society will help clean kennels, provide food and water, and socialize the cats at the two stores. PETCO staff at both locations will also help care for the cats and have generously offered to provide many of the necessary supplies. The staff will also be responsible for completing the adoption process on site.
The Keizer PETCO store is located at 6429 Keizer Station NE. The Salem PETCO store is located at 628 Lancaster Dr NE.
